This book, The Use, Misuse and Abuse of Jihad is in 2 parts, and this is the first part of the series. The book addresses the misconceptions regarding the concept of Jihad and the spread of Islam on the basis of Islamic textual analysis and historical evidence. The book has 6 sections in total, and the first part covers sections 1 – 3. This gives an overview of the concept of jihad, digging deep into its use in the Qur'an, Hadith and by jurists. It also addresses the misconception of jihad being “holy war”, establishing that jihad is against aggression, which could be by Muslims or people of other faiths, and not against religious diversity. It also considers jihad during the Prophet's lifetime and clarifies the misconceptions regarding the battles which the Prophet (pbuh) participated in, and his treatment of the Jews of Medina. Lastly, it covers the Islamic law of war, particularly related to justifications for going to war and regulations for the conduct of war.
